So to treat myself for finishing a successful first year of college I bought the new Tool and Red Hot Chili Pepper's CD's. My thouhts go here:
10,000 Days, Tool: I was expecting something along the lines of Lateralus, and was very surpised when I picked this up. However, I think this is a good thing in retrospect, because previously every Tool album had been unique enough to warrant owning. This album holds up this tradition. One initial thing that struck me was that Maynard seems to have stuck with the sound he developed through A Perfect Circle, which was somewhat disappointing for me. While APC is a very good band, I was hoping Maynard would maintain a distinction between the sounds of the two bands. This wasn't enough to ruin the CD for me, by any means. As far as the overall sound of the album, it was a lot spacier and more hallucinogenic than Lateralus was. If Lateralus could be described as a logically reasoned and mathematical concept, then 10,000 days could be described as a continually evolving and reinventing concept that really has no physical manifestation. It really takes a few listen throughts to fully "accept" due to the floatiness and lack of focus of many of the tracks, but they really have a lot to offer in this lack of structure. Indeed, after listening to the CD about 3 and 1/2 times through at different times of the day and different moods/energy levels, I can say that I definitely like it better than Lateralus when taken as a whole.
Stadium Arcadium, Red Hot Chili Peppers: Not as much to say here, since their music is far more accessible than Tool's. I was continually disappointed by their albums since Blood Sugar Sex Magic. I liked Californication to a certain extent, but it took me awhile to really accept By The Way as a legitimately decent album. Going into this new album I managed to prevent myself from bringing any preconcieved notions of what I expect from the Peppers. I had to accept the fact that BSSM was a completely unique musical creation that likely won't ever by matched by this band, or any band of similar style for many years. With that in mind, I was very pleased with this album. I definitely liked it more than By The Way by a significant margin, and probably more than Californication. However, there was a LOT of music to get a grasp on over these two 14 track CD's, and I am still in the process of giving each album a complete "listen" (ie, several listen throughs, examining different things each time). What I can say so far is that there is a lot of fantastic music on these two CDs, but a lot of it seems to be weighted towards the first CD. The second CD all seems somewhat tangental and extraneous. I feel like if they had taken the strongest songs on both CDs and condensed the overall material to a more concise presentation it would have been a legendary album. While the volume of music certainly does offer a lot, it also detracts from the greatness of the best that it has to offer.

I was just thinking how cliche but classically awesome the concept of a schizophrenic or dualistic personality villian is (read: Twoface).

| Check it, yo.
I was worried about the new Chili Pepper's album cause I wasn't a big fan of By the Way, but this song is pretty awesome, and the video was very well made. Hopefully they will go through the bay area around august so I can see them then and catch them again in Denver :D.
